From a Canon boy - for an entry level camera with a kit lens these images are very good. Where to next for Nikon. Will Sony soon have a 30MP DX sensor that Nikon will use in the D300s replacement? Can't see the point at all in an entry level camera. Top lens tests on this camera needed now ... Please!!


For an entry slur the JPG images, even the high ISO, look pretty good to me. it´s simple, Sony (or other Nikon sensor sources) doesn’t make a low MP cheap sensor anymore, and there is nothing wrong with those high MP sensors Nikon is using nowadays, it´s better in IQ -low and high is and DR than any of the previous Nikon entry level sensors, so I don’t see an specially if you print at the same size as with the previous 12 MP cams Nikon had, ibex you´ll see much better quality prints.

You tell me: in which Sony camera can we find D3(D700), D3s, D800 sensors? These are clearly Nikon sensors, maybe they are made in Sony factories, but its Nikon design and product. Do you think all the parts that goes in Nikon cameras but sensor are made in Nikon plants? It's mostly the other way around: sensor manufacturers offer their wares and Nikon picks whatever suits them best.

Sony makes the sensors and offers them to third parties, which add their own tweaks and image processors (Speed for Nikon vs. Exmore for Sony).
Nikon and Pentad are able to buy the sensor. It doesn’t matter if the sensors Nikon is putting in cameras are Sony didn’t make a random sensor and then Nikon put in camera, it’s the other way around, Nikon designed sensor, and some factory (doesn’t really matter which) made it, by Nikon design.
I still don’t get why are people so possessed by where Nikon sensors are made (those are Nikon sensors).

Nikon did not hand Sony the design and just use Sony as the fib. It's Sony's own design that was mildly tweaked by Nikon. Sony have far more skill in digital sensor design and development than Nikon does.

2012 Nikon 1 V1 and J1 review

The system is spearheaded by two cameras - the Nikon 1 J1 and 1 V1. The V1 and J1's standout features are their autofocus and continuous shooting abilities. Both cameras feature a 'hybrid' AF system that combines both Phase and Contrast Detection methods, which in principle allows them to keep track of fast-moving subjects in much the same way as SLRs can (and compacts and other mirrorless cameras conspicuously can't). Perhaps nothing signals Nikon's long-term commitment to the 1 System, however, more than its decision to build both cameras around a completely new lens mount and a unique 10MP CMOS sensor.

Nikon has announced the V1 enthusiast small sensor mirrorless camera. Built around what the company is calling a 'CX' format 10MP CMOS sensors, the cameras is part of the company's new Nikon 1 line. The 1" type sensor (13.2mm x 8.8mm) gives a 2.7x crop. An adapter allowing the use of Nikon F-mount lenses will follow.
The mechanical shutter also allows it to use flash at shutter speeds of 1/250th of a second, rather than the 1/60th that the electronic shutter limits the cameras.

Nikon D800 Rumors update the color black

Sensor
The Nikon D700 has a full-frame 12 million pixel sensor and there are rumours that its replacement will have three times as many pixels. Nikon uses a 24Mp sensor in its flagship SLR, the full-frame D3X. When Nikon introduced the D700 it couldn't shoehorn in a 100% viewfinder AND a sensor cleaning system.

Autofocus and speed.
Nikon introduced a hybrid AF system for its Nikon 1 cameras. The 51-point phase detection AF system in Nikon's D3S is widely beleived to be second to none, but we'll be looking for some enhancements for the D800. We'd also like Nikon to take a leaf out of Canon's recipebook for the EOS-1DX and make the AF system menu options clearer, so users are able to get the best from their camera.
In order to acheive high continuous shooting rates and sensitvity levels the D800 will need to high-speed processor.

Metering
We have complaints about the D700's metering system, but Nikon has subsequently produced a more sophistacated system that uses a dedicated 2,016 pixel sensor so we'd like this to appear in the D800.

The newly designed 14.2-megapixel DX-format CMOS image sensor is coupled to the latest generation EXPEED 2 image processor; a combination that allows both higher resolution and 1080p movie capture at 24 fps. The Nikon D3100 adds today's must-have Live View and Movie modes, both of which were conspicuously absent on the D3000. Perhaps even more unusually, the Nikon D3100 provides full-time autofocusing capability both in Live View mode and during movie capture. The Nikon D3100 also offers basic in-camera movie editing capabilities.

The D3100 is the first Nikon digital SLR to support the latest generation of Secure Digital cards, known as SDXC. The Nikon D3100's burst rate is unchanged, at three frames per second. The Nikon D3100 has an estimated selling price of US$699.95.

Nikon D3100

The Nikon D3100's Mode dial features the same thirteen operating modes as the D3000. Like the D3000 before it, the Nikon D3100 is shipping with Nikon's 18-55mm VR image-stabilized lens. The remainder of the Nikon D3100's new controls are found on its rear panel.

One further change on the Nikon D3100's rear is the addition of a nine-hole speaker grille at the lower right corner, for use with the new movie mode. Connectivity. Sensor and processor. The Nikon D3100 also retains the D3000's Scene Recognition System, 3D Tracking capability, and selection of auto-area, single-point, and dynamic-area AF modes.

The selection of exposure modes is unchanged from the Nikon D3000, with the D3100 offering Full Auto, Program AE, Manual, Aperture Priority, and Shutter Priority modes, as well as a selection of six scene modes -- Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Macro, and Night Portrait. Flash modes include Forced, Slow Sync, Rear-curtain Sync, Red-eye Reduction, and Slow Sync with Red-eye Reduction. Dust control. As with the D3000, the Nikon D3100 offers a Retouch menu that lets users tweak images to their tastes after capture. Compared to that from the D3000, the Nikon D3100's Retouch menu offers several new functions -- straighten, distortion control, fisheye, and perspective control. Nikon tells us that the new EXPEED 2 image processor has brought improved performance for its Active D-Lighting function.

The Nikon D3100 also includes Nikon's Picture Control System, which allows control of sharpening, contrast, brightness, saturation and hue. No vertical battery grip is available for the Nikon D3100.
To respond to this concern of users advancing to a digital-SLR camera, Nikon began equipping its entry level digital-SLR cameras with a Guide mode that displays instructions for the most basic camera operations for shooting, image playback and editing and the application of camera settings, in the camera monitor.

The first camera to be equipped with Guide mode was the Nikon D3000 released in August 2009. A new DX-format CMOS image sensor developed by Nikon and the new image-processing engine, EXPEED 2, have been adopted for the new D3100, enabling capture of images exhibiting excellent image quality and definition. The D3100 is also equipped with a live view function that allows the user to frame images in the monitor, and the D-Movie function that provides support for high-definition movie recording.
