 It doesn't require batteries, drawing it's power from the camera battery. It is pretty powerful for it size and have been delighted to see some of my night time----indoor shots which normally look terrible look as bright and as softly light as if it were day light outside.

It seems  pretty friendly on the battery life as well, I haven't noticed a significant drop in battery life with the flash as compared to without (I suppose that may change as the battery ages).

The AF550's alternative MF Check LV mode,which raises the mirror and exposes the imaging sensor like the live view modes on most other DSLRs, has been renamed and greatly improved. The Alpha a550's MF Check LV button, which puts the camera in Live View mode from the main imaging sensor, has been renamed Focus Check LV for the Sony A560.

Also visible is the reworked Mode dial, which adds a Sweep Panorama position, and consolidates all of the Scene modes into a single shared position. This allows the movie function to be accessed in any operating mode, although ISO sensitivity, shutter speed and aperture for movie shooting remain under automatic control regardless of the mode currently selected. As in the A550, the  A560's Function menu, allowing quick settings changes for common exposure variables. A small sensor on the lower right of the Sony A560's LCD can be set to dim or brighten the LCD's backlight automatically when needed.

Image Sensor : At the heart of the Sony A560 is a Sony Exmore APS HD CMOS image sensor with dimensions of 23.4 x 15.6mm, roughly equivalent to a frame of APS-C film.

The Sony A560's sensor has an effective resolution of 14.2 megapixels, and yields 3:2 aspect ratio images with dimensions of up to 4,592 x 3,056 pixels. In addition to two lower-resolution 3:2 modes of 3,344 x 2,224 and 2,288 x 1,520 pixels, the Sony A560 offers three modes that crop the sensor's output to a 16:9 aspect ratio, suitable for viewing on wide-screen HDTVs. The Sony A560's 16:9 image modes are 4,592 x 2,576, 3,344 x 1,872, and 2,288 x 1,280 pixels respectively.

The imager is mounted on a movable platter, allowing for Sony's Steady Shot INSIDE image stabilization with all compatible lenses. Output from the image sensor is handled by Sony's proprietary BIONZ image processor.

Multi-Frame NR : The Sony A560 also includes a new Multi-frame NR function, which captures six images in sequence, and then combines them in-camera into a single image with reduced noise levels. The function is similar to Sony's Handheld Twilight mode -- which the A560 also offers, but differs in allowing the desired ISO sensitivity to be selected manually, so it can function even at lower sensitivities.

Autofocus : The Sony Alpha A560 offers an overhauled TTL phase detection auto focusing system, which now provides 15 AF points, six more than in the A550. Thanks to a secondary image sensor in the A560's prism assembly, Sony is able to continue using the standard phase-detection AF system while displaying a Live View image on the camera's LCD display.

For example : in Quick AF Live View mode, the Sony A560 is able to offer face detection when focusing with the phase-detection sensor. The Sony A560's face detection system also allows a Smile Shutter function, which can automatically trigger the camera's shutter immediately when your subject smiles. Focus Check LV : Alternatively, the Sony A560's Live View can function in Focus Check live view mode, accessed via a dedicated button on the camera's top panel. Unlike the equivalent mode in the A550, either contrast detection or phase detection auto focusing is now possible in this mode, as well as manual focusing. The autofocus mode is locked to single whenever Focus Check live view is active.
Movies. Sony has provided three choices for movie resolution, recorded in one of two formats.

Like many video-capable DSLRs, the Sony A560 provides no direct manual control over video exposure, with the ISO sensitivity, shutter speed and aperture all selected automatically, regardless of the operating mode currently selected on the Mode dial.

Modes : The Sony A560 includes Auto, Program, Aperture- and Shutter-priority, and Manual shooting modes plus Sweep Panorama, Scene, and Flash Off modes. The Sweep Panorama mode is has appeared in Sony's Cyber-shot and NEX-series cameras previously, and is now making its debut in an Alpha DSLR.

Previously seen in Sony's NEX and Cyber-shot series cameras, the Hand-held Twilight mode captures multiple shots at high sensitivity, and then combines them in-camera to create a single image with reduced blur from camera shake. Available shutter speeds from the Sony A560's electronically controlled, vertical travel focal plane shutter range from 1/4,000 to 30 seconds, plus a bulb mode, and flash sync is available at 1/160 second.

The Sony A560 uses a 40-segment honeycomb-patterned SPC sensor to determine exposures in all modes except for Quick AF Live View and Focus Check Live View modes, where the secondary image sensor can be used to provide for more accurate 1,200-zone evaluative metering.

Metering modes available in the Sony A560 include Multi-segment, Center-weighted, and Spot. 2.0 EV of exposure compensation is available in 1/3 EV steps, and the Sony A560 also allows for three-shot bracketed exposures in 0.3 or 0.7 EV steps.

The Sony A560 retains Sony's excellent menu system largely unchanged, except for the addition of two new tabs, covering storage and clock settings, respectively. The Sony A560 also retains the A550's Function menu, with simple icons that line the screen left and right. The A560's Playback mode adopts the newer design from Sony's NEX-series single-lens direct view cameras, which is peculiar in that you can't review both images and videos at the same time. To see movies, you have to switch to Movie mode and shoot a quick movie.

Sony's user-friendly Help Guide Display is active by default, and shows a brief explanation as the Mode dial is turned, or when the active menu selection is changed.

 Flash : The Sony A560's built-in popup flash has a guide number of 12 meters at ISO 100, and 18mm coverage. Flash modes include Auto, Fill, Slow-sync, and Rear-sync, and 2.0 EV of flash exposure compensation is available in 0.3 EV steps.

Sony's HDR mode captures two shots with anywhere from 1 to 6 EV between the exposures, set in 1 EV increments -- double the overall range of the A550, but with half the granularity, plus a third image at nominal exposure.

An Auto HDR mode selects the appropriate range and step size automatically, depending on the range of brightness detected within the scene. The Sony A560 also includes Sony's optional D-Range Optimizer function, which works from a single shot and hence isn't limited to static subjects. The Sony A560's Creative Style function offers six pre-defined creative image styles, which adjust image tonality, saturation, and contrast. Continuous shooting.

 A Speed Priority burst mode locks exposure and focus from the first frame, which allows an impressive seven frames per second when using either the viewfinder or Live View mode.

Hardest hit is the Large / Standard JPEG mode, where burst depth is slashed from 116 images to just 47. Interestingly, when shooting in  mode, burst depth is unchanged at seven frames.

The Sony A560 includes an HDMI Type-C mini connector which allows display of images on high-definition displays (though no cable is included), as well as USB 2.0 High-Speed computer connectivity. Power.

Both cameras were focusing soft when using phase detection autofocus at wide-angle. I confirmed by switching to contrast detect autofocus during focus check live view with each camera and got sharper results.
Handling. Kudos, Sony. Top left of the A560, the Mode dial improvements also help handling.

The Sony A560's grip is mid-sized with a slight bias towards smaller hands.
Optical Viewfinder. If you set the Sony A560 to Spot or Local auto focusing, the center or autofocus point you select will light up red when focus is achieved.
Autofocus. Sony's A560 has a peppy and eager autofocus system.

Focus Check Live View : This mode replaces Manual Focus Check Live view and now allows two focusing options: Contrast-detect autofocus with SAM and SSM branded lenses (that includes third party makers such as Sigma and Tampon), and phase-detection autofocus.

Getting accurate exposure, framing, and focus is quite easy with the A560's layout. Macro shooting is a blast in this mode. HD Video. The Alpha A560 is Sony's first traditional DSLR to have full HD video capture.

Canon EOS 60D Reviews

Canon EOS 60D

inherits from the EOS 7D is the 63-zone fill (Intelligent Focus, Color, Luminance) Metering System. As I said in the Canon EOS 7D Review been watching Canon's auto exposure systems improve over the years. Starting at ISO 100 and going through---Auto ISO is fully featured (Auto ISO settings used to be limited) and works in most modes including M mode. It works especially well in One Shot Canon DSLRs typically focus very quickly and accurately (lightning fast if you are used to point and shoot autofocus).

My subjective evaluation, based a large part on shooting thousands of frames at soccer and using the best available sports lenses (including the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens and Canon EF 400mm---L IS USM Lens) is that the 60D delivers reasonable AI Servo  performance falls in line with its position in the Canon DSLR lineup - better than the Rebel models and not as good as the 7D.

A focus feature notably missing from the Canon EOS 60D is the AF Micro adjustment feature found in the EOS 50D.

Rebel (and point & shoot) owners especially will appreciate how large the 60D's pent prism  viewfinder has approximately 96% coverage, a slight increase over the 50D's 95% coverage. This image was shot  A great feature implemented in the 60D is the Single-Axis Electronic Viewfinder Level, Pressing the camera's shutter button halfway down clears the level indication.

accuracy is not always easy - and any time spent after the shutter button is pressed half way is time during which the camera may be going out of level. The 60D's built-in level is accurate and always available in Live View with a press of the Info button - in both vertical and horizontal camera orientations. The Canon EOS 60D's high quality LCD  and contains 1.04 million dots (a relatively small increase from the 50D  quality is great.

The 50D's joystick is gone - replaced by a new Multi-Control Dial. A Lock button works in conjunction with a menu option to enable the Multi-Control Dial to be locked - and functions as the print button (remember - the one that used to get a dedicated button?) in image review mode. The new Live View (Video Start/Stop) button is nicely located. A new Quick Control Button ("Q") opens an easy-to-use settings change  locations and functions. The LCD light button was and remains a single-function button as it should.

The 60D's top LCD (a nice feature that is missing on the Rebel models) is no longer a rectangle but is stylishly designed to better follow the contour of the camera.

The Canon EOS 60D has a total of 15 shooting modes available via the top dial that offer something for shooters of all skill levels. Video mode is new as is B (Bulb) mode.

As would be expected at this point in time, the Canon EOS 60D has received the renowned, game-changing EOS HD video capabilities. While it is not a perfect-for-everyone video package, the 60D, with its huge-to-video-camera-standards sensor, delivers very impressive video image quality.

What you get with the 60D's HD video is most similar to the 7D's feature set. In-camera video trimming is available and Canon's Movie Crop mode is featured. Plan on using manual focus or pre-focusing for video recording.
New to the axed line and similar to the EOS 7D, this pop-up flash includes an Integrated Speedier Transmitter for control of multiple off-camera EOS Speediness. No Canon 580EX II Flash or Canon ST-E2 Speedier Transmitter is needed to completely control as many remote flashes as desired. As shown in the images above, the Canon EOS 60D has received the same level of weather sealing as the EOS 50D. This amount is slightly less than the 7D's level of sealing.

The Canon EOS 60D breaks new DSLR ground by offering in-camera RAW image processing and creative digital filters.

Brightness, Picture Style, White Balance (WB), Color Space, High-ISO Noise Reduction, Peripheral Illumination Correction, linear distortion correction and chromatic aberration correction changes can be made to RAW images while still in the camera. JPG-captured images can also be resized (down) in-camera. Images can also now be rated in-camera.

The Canon EOS 60D offers 4 creative filters: Grainy B/W, Soft Focus, Toy Camera Effect (igniting and color shift) and Miniature Effect (reverse tilt-shift look). These filters can be applied to a RAW or JPG image in-camera. Because the quality of the lens makes a big difference in the image quality delivered by a DSLR, I recommend buying, now or later, one of the better Canon general purpose lenses available. At this review date, the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens and Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens are my most-recommended APS-C/1.6x lenses with the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens and the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM Lens being excellent alternatives.

Then add one of the Canon EF 70-200mm L Lenses to your kit.

The Canon EOS 60D used in this review was purchased retail. Owning a Canon product gives you access to Canon support. Canon did write one - it's called the owner's manual.

Perhaps the remaining question is - who should buy a Canon EOS 60D? The 7D's 8 fps frame rate is clearly faster than the 60D's 5.3 fps rate and the shutter has a 50% higher durability rating.

The least compelling upgrade will of course be from the Canon EOS 50D. Fortunately, the Canon EOS 60D's price tag is significantly lower than that of previous axed bodies - a feature we can all celebrate.

Instead it represents a new category of Canon DSLRs designed to precisely fill the gap between the consumer level EOS 550D / Rebel T2i and the semi-pro EOS 7D. Like other semi-pro cameras, the Canon EOS 60D offers two control wheels; a small one on the top of the handgrip, and a large, spinning dial on the back of the camera. This rear quick control dial is characteristic of all high-end Canon EOS cameras. The mode dial does feature a lock button which helps to prevent unintentional changes to your settings.

On the 50D, pressing the joystick opened the new Quick Control screen. On top of the Canon EOS 60D, positioned above the smaller and simplified status LCD display, are four buttons, each of which now has a single function rather than the dual-function buttons of the 50D. While some technology has attempted to correct for camera blur by building the Image Stabilization mechanism into the lens, the Olympus E-M5 IS mechanism is incorporated into the camera body itself so that all lenses mounted on the body can take advantage of this sophisticated technology, whether shooting stills or HD video.

HDR used properly is appropriate for photojournalism, says Unified Color's Omvik review

'Using HDR software and processing tools is the only method a photographer has to deliver precisely

 Are High Dynamic Range photos appropriate for illustrating news? That's the debate that's been started by the Washington Post's use of an HDR image on its front page in January. John Omvik, Marketing VP with HDR software maker Unified Color understandably disagrees. “HDR is not appropriate for documentary photojournalism.” Elliot points out that the NPPA’s code of ethics say photographers should respect the integrity of the digital moment, “and in that light an HDR photo is no different from any other digital manipulation.”

As vice president of Unified Color Technologies, a pioneer in the field of HDR imaging, I strongly disagree with Elliot and the NPPA’s viewpoint. When properly used, HDR does the most accurate job of reconstructing the dynamic range of the original scene at the time the photo was taken. Respect the integrity of the photographic moment.

Proper use of HDR does not alter, mislead or misrepresent a scene. Until that time, the HDR process is the best option for photographers seeking to convey a sense of realism.  The controversy stems from the fact that staff photographer Bill O’Leary used High Dynamic Range (HDR) techniques to process this photo, a fact the Post mentioned in the photo’s caption.

Ricoh has released standard zoom GXR module with 16MP APS-C sensor

The latest camera unit offers a flexible focal length range that starts slightly wider than the average kit zoom, without making the camera excessively large. Sony NEX-7 In-Depth Review cameras with APS-C sensors

When Sony first introduced its range of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras , the company was very clear about who it thought would buy the NEX-5 and its near-identical-twin NEX-7. Small cameras with APS-C sensors, we were told, would appeal to compact camera users who wanted to upgrade but would be intimidated by the bulk and perceived complexity of an SLR.

The cameras were a sales success (especially in Japan), and their influence on this sector of the market has become increasingly clear, with Olympus's PEN E-PL3 paying extensive homage to their key design features, and Panasonic stripping-down its GF line from the enthusiast-friendly DMC-GF1 to the distinctly beginner-orientated DMC-GF3.

In practice, though, it wasn't just beginners buying these cameras. Now, with the NEX-7, Sony is specifically targeting those advanced users with a camera whose key spec reads like it's come straight off an enthusiast's wishlist. The rear dial and three 'soft' keys familiar from the backs of the existing NEX cameras are retained, as is the handy tilting rear LCD. The resulting 'Triple-dial-control' interface makes the NEX-7 the first interchangeable-lens digital camera that in normal use gets one dial dedicated to each of the main exposure parameters (for example shutter speed, aperture and ISO in Manual mode) - such an eminently sensible arrangement we're amazed it hasn't been done before.

The X-Pro 1 uses an entirely new all-electronic lens mount, and the initial lens line-up will consist of a set of bright primes with focal lengths that neatly complement the X100's 23mm F2. There's an 18mm F2 wideangle, 35mm F1.4 normal, and 60mm F2.4 Macro telephoto (offering 28mm, 50mm and 90mm equivalents respectively)

provided a first look at Fujifilm’s new mirrorless compact system camera, the Fujifilm X-Pro1. In doing so, Fuji was able to completely remove the low-pass optical filter from the X-Pro1’s system.


Fuji has also added some “secret sauce” via the new EXR Processor Pro and the X-Pro1 seemingly out-resolves much larger sensors at a range of ISOs. In the meantime, you can check out Fuji’s sample images shot with the Fuji X-Pro1 here. For instance, the lens focus was noisy and the aperture ring rotated roughly. Dedicated accessory flash units common to the other X-series cameras work and a new EF-X20 flash was designed just for this camera. To that end, the Fujinon lens design team has created the XF Lens system and X-Mount for the X-Pro1, determining that an extremely short lens flange to sensor distance would be critical to the design. Subsequently, Fuji was able to adjust lens designs for optimum coverage of the sensor.

The initial launch of the Fujifilm X-Pro1 will include three fast but compact lenses: 18mm f/2, 35mm f/1.4 and a 60mm f/2.4 Macro (think 28/50/90mm full frame 35mm equivalents give or take a millimeter or three).
